Turquie : nouveau coup dur pour le tourisme

Turquie : nouveau coup dur pour le tourisme

The Blue Mosque and Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, the seaside town of Bodrum or the archaeological wonders of Ephesus are just some of the Turkish tourist spots that will have to wait for foreign tourists to return. The attempted coup was followed, if necessary, by a Turkish economic sector already plagued by the proliferation of attacks. Since January 1st, no less than nine attacks, claimed by Daech or related to the Kurdish conflict, have come to cool the lovers of old stones, paradisiacal beaches and culture several thousand years old.

Yesterday, the United States suspended all flights of US airlines to and from Turkey. If in Europe no restriction has been imposed, Lufthansa yesterday removed eight of its ten flights and Air France two flights out of three. For today, the tricolor company should maintain its three daily flights. Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered his government to organize the repatriation of the 5,000 Russians on holiday to Turkey. On the Quai d'Orsay side, if the destination is not discouraged, the utmost caution is required. On the night of Friday to Saturday, the French Embassy in Ankara sent SMS to the approximately 7,000 French nationals settled in Turkey, half of them binational, to stay at home while Erdogan's supporters were Called to go down into the street.

With around 36 million foreign visitors each year, Turkey is the 6th largest destination in the world. Tourism accounts for 6% of Turkey's gross domestic product (GDP). Above all, it brings 16% of jobs in a country where the unemployment rate exceeds 10%. Before this abortive military coup, Turkish economists expected the tourism sector to lose almost € 11 billion in 2016.

Free fall reservations

It must be said that for several months, reservations are in free fall. According to the latest figures published in April, before the suicide bombing at Istanbul's Atatürk International Airport in late June, which killed more than 40 people, French tourists fell by 38% April 2015, 35% for the Germans and up to 79% for the Russians. And for this summer, tour operators recorded a drop in bookings that can reach 70%. Bad figures that should benefit the European tourist countries spared the attacks: Spain, Portugal and Italy.
