Egypt takes action to boost tourism

Egypt announced on Thursday the launch of an international campaign for tourism promotion of 63 million euros over three years aimed at giving a new impetus to this activity that is suffering. The sector has fallen by 45% since the beginning of the year.
The times, though not so distant, where Egypt shines on international tourism are now over. Since the beginning of the year, only 3.5 million tourists have visited the land of the Pharaohs; They were 14.7 million in 2010, the record year that preceded the Arab Spring. In an effort to revive this preponderant part of the Egyptian economy, the country will spend 70 million dollars (63 million euros) over three years to praise the charms of a destination that, from Cairo to the Valley of the Kings, suffers .
"If the seers are fairly green in the Arab region, North America or Asia, they are red in Europe," explains the Egyptian Tourism Minister Yehia Rashed. Alas, Europe is our biggest market, and the target of 11 million that we had hoped will not be for this year. " Fiscal year 2015 had given rise to hopes for further growth. Las, the attack last November against a Russian flight of the company Métrojet (224 deaths) stopped net tourist activity. Attendance fell immediately, but this decline was limited to 4%, to 9 million tourists, in the year 2015. The consequences were mainly felt in the first quarter of 2016 with a 75% drop in attendance. This led to a 45% drop between January and August.
The French

In less than ten years, the French have deserted the country. While they were close to 600,000 the best years, only 68,000 went to Egypt between January and August. The crash (66 deaths) of EgyptAir flight last May has, once again, deterred French travelers from coming. To try to curb this desertion, Egypt will intensify its promotional efforts in the Hexagon and improve service with, for example, flights to Luxor (or other tourist sites) from provincial airports. To accommodate airlines, airport taxes could be lowered or temporarily eliminated. "We have also resumed contact with Transavia, which obviously would like to return to Egypt," said the Ministry of Tourism.
In fact, flights from France are among the most expensive ... However, the French clientele is particularly appreciated. "The French spend more than the Russians, for example, between 75 and 80 dollars a night, they travel longer, stay 7 to 8 days." Another advantage is that they do not only frequent the seaside resorts, but also move around the country. However, the terrorist risk curbs these cravings. "The country is safe," tries to reassure the minister.
